PATCHING

Managed Patching

Unpatched software is the way most small-business breaches start.

What it is

We keep your operating systems and the third-party software on your devices up to date — the browsers, PDF readers and plugins that attackers actually exploit — monitored centrally and reported to you each month.

It is a separate service from endpoint protection: one detects threats, this removes the holes they come through.

Why it matters

The overwhelming majority of breaches exploit a vulnerability that already had a patch available. Attackers do not need a new trick when the old hole is still open.

Patching sounds simple and never happens — someone is always too busy, a machine is always missed. Managed patching makes it happen and proves it happened.

What's included

  • Operating-system patching, monitored centrally
  • Third-party application patching (browsers, plugins, readers)
  • Monthly patch report showing what was applied
  • Exceptions flagged rather than silently skipped
SMB1001

A patch-management process is required from SMB1001 Silver, and managed patching is included in every certification plan from Bronze.

Common questions

Will updates reboot machines during work hours?

No — patching is scheduled to avoid disruption, and disruptive updates are staged for out-of-hours where possible.

Does endpoint protection not already do this?

No. Endpoint protection detects and responds to threats; it does not update your software. They are complementary.

What about a patch that breaks something?

Patches are monitored and problem updates can be held. You get a monthly report of what was applied and anything deferred.
